Loredana Bertè – “In Alto Mare”
Italian disco soul with an edge of liberation.
Released in 1980, “In Alto Mare” (translated as Out at Sea) is one of Loredana Bertè’s signature hits — and a standout gem from the golden era of Italo disco-funk. With its sailing metaphor and groovy bassline, this track is both sensual and existential.
Born in Bagnara Calabra, Loredana Bertè brought a rebellious spirit to Italian pop. Unlike her sister Mia Martini, known for powerful ballads, Bertè embraced funk, rock, and dance influences, creating a unique hybrid sound. “In Alto Mare” showcases her smoky voice over a crisp arrangement of funk guitar riffs, lush strings, and tight drums.
The track was written by Pino Daniele and produced with a lush orchestration typical of late-70s Eurodisco. But what really sets it apart is Bertè’s raw delivery and her refusal to be boxed in — she sings of drifting into the unknown, navigating passion and uncertainty like a woman at the helm of her own ship.
Still played in Italian clubs and beloved by diggers across Europe, “In Alto Mare” feels as relevant now as it did 40 years ago — a funky feminist statement dressed in groove.
Now spinning on Funky Pearls Radio — the only place where funk speaks every language.
